Faculty Show: Victoria Veenstra, The Conversation Series

Victoria Veenstra has work in The Green Lion Gallery.

Located on 150 E Fulton in Grand Rapids, MI, Victoria will be showing work with Renee Zettle-Sterling.

Victoria's work, The Conversation Series, is a "chromagenic pinhole photographic series exploring the ebb and flow of conversations in monochromatic time between careers and life demands. A vusal quandary to the question 'what would a superwoman say if she had coffee with me today?' "

Really great work so make sure you stop by if your in the area. The gallery hours are simple enough, Fridays 5pm-9pm and Saturday 12pm-5pm, with a closing reception August 27, 7-11pm.

Sorry no images for the blog this time around, only a show card but that just means you'll have to come out to see the work in person and that's never a bad thing.

Victoria Veenstra has work in both the Festival for the Arts at the GRAM next week and at the Muskegon Museum of Art Regional exhibition. Unfortunately both receptions are on Thursday May 26, 5:00 -8:00pm and they are kinda far apart from one another.

But if you're in either area make sure you stop by one and see the work. Victoria won the William L. "Bill" Rogers Best of Photography Award at Muskegon Museum of Art so if you stop by the Muskegon show keep that in mind.

"Closer to Home" by The photo installation class at GVSU

There are more slaves in the world today than at any other time in human history. Sex trafficking is a huge part of this trade. The issue of sex trafficking has become more exposed to the public in the last decade but many in the U.S. still view it as a problem in far off countries.

There are estimated to be 325,000 CHILDREN trafficked for sex in the United States alone.
The average age of entry into the commercial sex industry in the U.S. is between 12 to 14 years old. -The Polaris Project

The photo installation class at GVSU is addressing the issues of sex trafficking and how it is a topic that is closer to home than you think.

Chicago Trip Fall 2010

Many students and all Photo faculty went to The Art Institute of Chicago on November 11 and had a wonderful experience looking at art and photography. A huge thanks goes to James Iska for all the information he provided. He spent a large part of his day with us going over photography, art and the museum. He was extremely generous with his time and we cannot thank him enough.

In addition, Kristina Jeluso was nice enough to snap a few shots from the day. All great stuff. I believe everyone is looking forward to the next time we can sneak away and look at some fantastic art.

Regional Scholarship Opportunity
SPE National Conference, March 10–13, 2011 in Atlanta, GA

The Midwest Region of the Society for Photographic Education is offering scholarships for students and adjunct instructors to attend the 2011 national conference, Science, Poetry and the Photographic Image. Each scholarship consists of a $500 travel award and a national conference fee waiver in each category: undergraduate student, graduate student and adjunct instructor. Scholarship recipients will be notified by December 15, 2010.

ELIGIBILITY
• All student applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a 2 or 4-year undergraduate or graduate program within the Midwest SPE Region and not graduating before the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.
• All adjunct (part-time) applicants must teach at a 2 or 4-year degree granting program within the Midwest SPE Region. If you are a current graduate student and instruct part-time, you may only choose one category to enter.
• Applicants are not required to be current members of SPE to apply, but recipients must become a member to receive the award and attend the national conference.
• Previous recipients of the MWSPE Scholarship are not eligible again for period of four (4) years following receipt of the award.
• Each award recipient will also have the opportunity to present his or her work at the next Midwest SPE Regional Conference in the fall of 2011.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Please follow these guidelines closely, incomplete submissions will not be considered.

1. Five (5) images from a cohesive body of work produced after January 1, 2010. (Adjunct submissions must consist of 10 images.)
a. All images submitted must contain a generic sRGB profile, 72 ppi, longest side 1280 px using the jpeg format.
b. Please title each image with the number, underscore, your last name, underscore, and title. (Example: 01_LastName_Title.jpg)
2. A letter and documentation addressing:
• Student Applicants: a brief resume including your name, address, phone number, email address, institutional information, contact information for your current photography professor (name, title, email and phone number), and any additional education or related experience.
• Adjunct Applicants: a two page CV including your name, address, phone number, email address, and institutional affiliation. Please include contact information for the program coordinator or department chair.

AND
• All Applicants:
a. How your attendance at the national conference will benefit you,
b. An artist statement for the work submitted (please keep this under 350 words),
c. A short description of the technical qualities/processes and conceptual foundation of your
work,
d. An image list of corresponding work (example: 01 Title of Image, date, medium, size),
e. A scan or photograph of your student ID or faculty/staff ID,
f. All saved and submitted in PDF format.
2. All application materials should be sent as a zipped or compressed file via email and Mac OS X
accessible.

SUBMISSIONS
All submissions must be emailed to art-timeforlight@wmich.edu with the scholarship you are applying for in the subject line. Failure to include the scholarship (e.g.: Undergrad, Grad, Adjunct, etc.) will be automatic grounds for disqualification.

Mark Malloy is a photographer, educator, and mentor, and served as SPE Southeast Chair from 2006- 2009. After teaching eight years at Appalachian State University, he is now head of RENEGADE Studios, in Los Angeles. SPE Student Scholarships

SPE National is giving away ten student scholarships to help offset the costs of attending the conference in Atlanta, GA on March 10-13. Each scholarship will include

$500 travel stipend to attend the 2011 SPE national conference
One-year membership to SPE
Complimentary 2011 national conference pass

The deadline is November 1st which means there is plenty of time to fine tune your work. They are looking for a cohesive body of work consisting of no more than five images, a 200 word artist statement, reasons why the scholarship will benefit you, resume, a description of the conceptual and technical basis of your work, and contact information of a current photography professor.

The flash could be improved if it had ETTL, a swivel head, and a metal instead of a plastic hot shoe. Regardless, it is a great flash to start off with if you cannot afford dedicated flash units, Alien Bees, etc.

Work should be securely packaged, clearly labeled, and sent with a return shipping label. Work will be returned in the same manner as delivered, or via UPS/USPS. Accepted work will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition.

Entry Fee: You may submit up to three pieces for a non-refundable entry fee of $15. The entry fee may be paid online or with cash, check, or money order (checks and money orders should be made payable to DESOTOROW GALLERY).

Sale of Work: Desotorow Gallery, Inc. will not take commission on the sale of artwork. Payment will be made directly to artists.

The equal yet opposite fear of small and large spaces plague people around the world. In some degree, there are places that will always provide a sense of anxiety, and this show wants to explore those carnal fears in an open forum. We invite all mediums to show us those spaces or landscapes that inspire these fears of the vast or the small.

There are many aspects to the job - correspondence, coordinating commercial work, archiving, financial stuff, travel plans, overseeing other assistants and interns, reporting back to Nan by email at the end of each day. A can-do, problem-solving approach is essential, along with previous artist assistant experience. Travel will sometimes be necessary, as Nan is living in both NY and Paris and often travels for shows or commercial work. French language skills a big plus. Consumption, A Main Gallery Photo Show for July.

Theme: Consumption is a multifaceted term that can signify the influence of advertising and marketing on our pervasive consumer culture. The word also speaks to our profound human instincts. To be consumed by something-be it illness, emotions, or beliefs-is to oftentimes confront one's realities. What, why, when, and how we consume determines the ramifications of the choices we make. Additionally, consumption can simply suggest a transformation. The Center is looking for images that visually depict Consumption and what it means to you and those around us.

Juror: Brian Paul Clamp is Director of ClampArt, a contemporary art gallery in Chelsea in New York City, established in 2000. Brian has nearly two decades of experience in the field. He holds a Masters of Art in Critical Studies in Modern Art from Columbia University, and is the author of thirty publications on American Art to date.

Exhibition and Awards: With selection for this exhibition, artists and their work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and others who appreciate the fine art of photography. Over $1300 in awards which includes:

We are please to announce a new art organization in metropolitan Detroit-Detroit Center for Contemporary Photograohy (DCCP). The inaugural opening is shceduled to take place on May 1st, 2010.

Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography was established in early 2010 in Pontiac, Michigan. DCCP is a collective of artists and educators that provide a supportive community for artists, and strive to send a positive message to the creative world. DCCP is a nonprofit institution which focuses on Contemporary Photography, and promotes the work of new and established artists with unique vision and creativity in working with all photographic media. Canyon de Chelly - Arizona

Nearly 70 years after originally scheduled to be displayed, the U.S. Department of the Interior has hung the murals that then-Secretary Harold Ickes commissioned Ansel Adams to photograph for the building. The murals were made in 1941 and 1942, but were never displayed.

Unfortunately it's not easy to get in to see the exhibit in person, but the DOI has made the images available on their web site, including high resolution versions.

This is a two day workshop involving digital photography, narrative conceptualizing, studio lighting and digital editing and printing.

District Quarterly is currently seeking submissions for the spring issue. District Quarterly is a new, award-winning, student-produced magazine published through the Student Media Center at SCAD. The magazine features original work by SCAD students, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, sequential art, illustration, painting, photography and more. The different works are combined by subject and theme to create a cohesive publication fall, winter and spring quarters each year.
The theme for the spring issue is materialism, and the deadline for submissions is Friday, March 26. Any current student at SCAD, undergrad or grad, may submit their work to be considered for publication in the magazine. The spring issue of District Quarterly is scheduled to launch near the end of April.

100+ Years of Color

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii was a pioneering color photographer working in Russia between 1909 and 1915. Yes, color photographer. His method involved making three exposures on black and white glass plate negatives, each using a different color filter, and the photographs were displayed using a special projector projected each plate through a color filter, combining them into a single image on the screen.

The Library of Congress has made a collection of his images available on the internet, using a process that scans each plate and then combines them digitally to make color photographs. The results are stunning. For ease in seeing the collection, the Denver Post has an blog post on their web site about the collection and have all the images on a single web page. It's definitely worth the time to take a look at these historic photographs, and if you're interested to read the history of the photographer and the process.

You may be a great young photographer, but how do you finance your first production when you land that big advertising job? Sure, the purchase order is signed and it’s been faxed to you, and even if the advance check is on its way, it will still take several days to clear. You might need access to 20K to buy plane tickets and reserve hotel rooms for crew and get the whole thing rolling. If you are an established photographer and you are reading this, I’m curious to know how you financed your first big job? I’ll give you my answer tomorrow. –greg

Ok cant remember what the FIRST job was that i faced the finance issue…In reality i think it still happens! I am always coming up against clients who DO NOT offer advances! And these are LARGE AGENCIES Just something i have to deal with, and prepare for. The bonus has been that they will pay in full 30-max 6o days after completion of job.
I think it all breaks down to SAVINGS. From my first job till now, its always important to have a good bit of money ready to go. Now the range of how much you need, is directly related to what level you are in your career. I think back to my first location gig…it was “BIG Time” ok just kidding, it was me, an assistant, and talent. Assistant held a SMALL battery powered strobe, Models brought their own clothes and did their own make up….My total cost to fund was about $45. Now My cost to fund can be as much as 5-10K. So kinda stinks to keep that much tied up…but for me its part of the DANCE
Now if you get a considerable project while you are still young in the biz, bring in a producer, A MUST. Possibly, just Possibly that producer has more time in the biz, and maybe is use to funding projects, so you might luck out. But be prepared one day if you cannot fund the project, you might have to give it up, your project will suffer if you cut corners right off the bat.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Photography Competition

THE WOMEN'S COMMITTEE OF THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE ITS FIRST PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO COMPETITION.

A jury of nationally recognized photography experts will select six entries for inclusion in a 16" x 20" portfolio to be published in an edition of 25 in fall 2010. Peter Barberie, the Museum's Brodsky Curator of Photographs, will select one additional honorable mention entry to be sold as an individual print in a limited edition.

AWARDS Each winning photographer will be awarded $1,000. The honorable mention photographer will be awarded $500.

EXHIBITION The Museum will exhibit the portfolio and the individual print in fall 2010, and copies of both will enter the permanent collection.

JURORS Jurors will include noted photographer Tina Barney; Melissa Harris, Editor-in-Chief, Aperture Magazine; and Peter Barberie, The Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Photographing Sunshine

Does cinematography count as photography? It's certainly concerned with matters of exposure and composition and light and color, so there is overlap. But it also has other issues to deal with, that of motion and time. Be that as it may, and I'm in danger of rambling if I don't stop myself now, here's an interesting article on the cinematography of the upcoming science fiction film Sunshine. It gets pretty technical, it is an article for cinematographers after all, but I think it's a worthwhile read for the discussion on the use of lighting and color to create the psychological impact of the sun.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Todd Brandow worked as an art consultant in New York for many years. Curtis vintage exhibitions, drawn from the collection of Christopher Cardozo, that were exhibited in European museums between 2000 and 2006. US State Department-sponsored modern print shows of Curtis’s work are currently touring Latin America, Europe and will be soon in North Africa and Japan under his direction. He co-curated a retrospective tour of Finnish photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen with critic A. D. Coleman. He recently co-curated with Musée de l'Elysée Director William Ewing and Senior Curator Nathalie Herschdorfer the exhibitions /Edward Steichen: Lives in Photography/ and /Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years 1923-1937/. Brandow is the founding director of the Minnesota-based non-profit organization, the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography (FEP), and President of FEP Editions LLC. Currently, ten new major exhibitions are in the planning and production stages.

of original documentation for spoken, endangered and extinct Native American
languages. The NAA traces its origin to an 1879 Act of Congress creating an
official repository for documents concerning American Indians that were
collected by the Great Western Surveys of the United States. Approximately
250 American Indian languages are represented in the collection. For many of
these languages, scholarly linguistic documentation exists nowhere else.
Many of the materials in this collection are threatened by the deterioration
of the paper substrate and by damage from repeated handling. The
preservation of at-risk items and digitization for online access will
broaden access to endangered language materials with unparalleled research
value and cultural relevance.

Under the supervision our the Digital Imaging Manager, the intern will gain
hands-on experience in the technical aspects of digital image creation
(flatbed scanning and overhead digital camera capture) while learning about
imaging standards, image data and its preservation and storage, technical
and embedded metadata, digital asset management, and project management.
Specific tasks include scanning with flatbed and /or digital camera capture;
copying files to an external server for backup; maintaining records of
imaging projects in the archives' databases; and creating multi-page pdfs.
The imaging intern will also assist in making digital images accessible
through SIRIS (the Smithsonian's online catalog) and the world wide web.

Qualifications: Graduates, undergraduates, or recent graduates in archives
or
imaging programs who are interested in digital technologies as applied to
archival care and management of historical collections.

Mersmann is mainly known for his intense naturalistic graphite drawings

of the work itself. Discovering and rediscovering my chosen medium is the

In 1907, photographer Edward Curtis began work on a series of books and portfolios titled The North American Indian. The intent of the project was to document, both in writing and photography, the lives and cultures of the tribes living in the United States. The final project was comprised of 20 leather-bound volumes, each with an accompanying photographic portfolio, for a total of 2,228 illustrations. Edward Curtis began his career as a fine art photographer, and that sensibility guides all of the photographs in the books and portfolios. For anthropologists of his day, Curtis’s artistic technique was inferior to the documentary approach they advocated. The portraits are all carefully staged and lighted to create romanticized, timeless images of his sitters. Other images maintain this staging, and any artifacts from the advance of European civilization were carefully edited out, either in the initial photograph or in the later printing. Curtis’s intention to capture the spirit and nobility of a “vanishing race” clearly influences the content of the images, yet his are some of the best visual documents of the native cultures in the United States from that time.

The North American Indian was available by subscription, but due to the price, only about 220 were ever produced. The Hackley Public Library opened a subscription in 1908 and succeeded in purchasing an entire set of the North American Indian by 1930. Complete sets are extremely rare today. This one—no. 70—was transferred to the MMA in 1976. Highlights from this extensive collection will be displayed in two exhibition installments throughout the winter.

Desotorow Gallery announces a call to artists for “Blind Proxy,” an experimental, collective project that explores the idea of how placing one work of art next to another can create an unanticipated dialog. The exhibition “Blind Proxy” will be on display Jan. 29-Feb. 10, 2010.

The call for entries to “Blind Proxy” is open to national and international artists of all levels, and works of all genres and media. Works should be exactly 10 inches by 10 inches, and unframed. To be entered, an entry form and $10 entry fee should be submitted to Desotorow Gallery by 5pm, Jan. 22. You supply the piece and Desotorow will construct the puzzle, combining all the individual works into one large installation.

Desotorow Gallery announces a call to artists for “Illumination,” an exhibition to be held Jan. 22-Jan. 27, 2010. “Illumination” will be a juried exhibition of works of art created with or about light.

Larry Sultan, California Photographer, Dies at 63

Larry Sultan, a highly influential California photographer whose 1977 collaboration, “Evidence” — a book made up solely of pictures culled from vast industrial and government archives — became a watershed in the history of art photography, died on Sunday at his home in Greenbrae, Calif. He was 63.

The cause was cancer, said his wife, Katherine, who is known as Kelly.

In the mid 1970s using a grant and a letter of introduction from the National Endowment for the Arts, Mr. Sultan and Mike Mandel, who had met as students at the San Francisco Art Institute, somehow managed to persuade several large companies, agencies and research institutions like the Bechtel Corporation, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the San Jose Police Department and the United States Department of the Interior to let them rummage through their documentary photo files.

Highly influenced by the West Coast brand of Conceptualism then percolating out of places like the California Institute of the Arts, both men were interested, as Mr. Mandel later said, in exploring photography as “more than just the modernist practice of fine-tuning your style and way of seeing.” The pictures they chose from the archives, out of the hundreds of thousands they examined, were a strange, stark, sometimes disturbing vision of a late-industrial world: a space-suited figure sprawled face down on a carpeted floor; a car consumed in flames; a man holding up a tangle of weeds like a trophy; a shaved monkey being held down by a gloved hand.

Some of the images seemed to have been picked for their uncanny resemblance to installation art being made at the time. But the 59 photos published, with no captions to explain what they showed or where they came from, pursued a much broader, Duchampian agenda of harnessing found photographs for the purposes of art while using them as a way to examine the society that produced them. The critic Kenneth Baker of The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that the project demonstrated brilliantly the degree to which “we have no calculus to unravel relations between what a picture shows and what it explains.”

Along with other artwork using vernacular photographs, like that of Michael Lesy in his book “Wisconsin Death Trip” and of Richard Prince, the project, first shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, opened broad new avenues for photography that have since been explored by major museums and by artists like Christian Boltanski and Carrie Mae Weems.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Sultan was raised mostly in Los Angeles, where his family moved when he was an infant and where his father worked as a traveling salesman and later as a vice president for the Schick Safety Razor Company.

Not initially interested in photography, Mr. Sultan studied political science at the University of California at Santa Barbara and later earned a master’s degree in fine arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Before he and Mr. Mandel began working on “Evidence,” they collaborated on another project in which they bought space on billboards around Los Angeles and posted traffic-slowing Dada-esque messages. One bore the announcement “Oranges on Fire,” and showed two cartoonish arms holding a bunch of flaming oranges.

For more than a decade beginning in the early 1980s, Mr. Sultan, who became a professor at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, worked on a project about his mother and his father, who had been forced into early retirement. Using stills from home movies along with lush, colored-saturated pictures he took of his parents, the resulting book, “Pictures From Home,” was a deeply personal document but one that continued Mr. Sultan’s lifelong mission of exploring photography’s fictions.

Mr. Sultan’s father, Irving, speaking of a picture of himself in a suit sitting on the edge of a bed with a vacant stare on his face, related how his son had instructed him not to smile and had created a portrait that the elder Mr. Sultan felt was much more about the photographer than the photographed.

“ ‘Any time you show that picture,’ ” Mr. Sultan said his father told him, “‘you tell people that that’s not me sitting on the bed looking all dressed up and nowhere to go, depressed. That’s you sitting on the bed, and I am happy to help you with the project, but let’s get things straight here.’ ” His parents died not long after the work was completed.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Sultan is survived by two sons, Max and Will, both of Greenbrae; and two brothers, Michael, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Kenneth, of Santa Barbara.

In the 1990s, Mr. Sultan began to photograph in the San Fernando Valley, near when he went to high school, shooting suburban homes that were being rented as sets for pornographic movies. Sandra S. Phillips, the photography curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, said that while the work, called “The Valley,” was “nominally about the industry of adult sexual fantasy, the true subject of Sultan’s pictures is how photography is used in the construction of that fantasy.”

Writing in LA Weekly about the work in 2004, Mr. Sultan observed of one particular set: “The furnishings and objects in the house, which have been carefully arranged, become estranged from their intended function. The roll of paper towels on the coffee table, the bed linens in a pile by the door, the shoes under the bed are transformed into props or the residue of unseen but very imaginable actions. Even the piece of half-eaten pie on the kitchen counter arouses suspicion.”

The Importance of Branding

This is a good article, written by an art buyer, with some good advice on branding and identity as a creative professional: Ask an Art Buyer: The Importance of Branding and Other Things

A couple of things stick out to me. First, while branding is important, don't put effort into your brand at the expense of your work:

"I don’t mind if photographers want to bling out their promos for extra attention as long as the quality of the work goes along with it. What I don’t dig, is photographers spending what looks like a ton of money on business cards, expensive promos or portfolios meanwhile they really need to spend more time crafting their work."

And second, in the example used in the article, the photographer hired a designer to craft his identity and put together his marketing materials:

"I decided to hire a designer to create my look on market. As a photographer who appreciates good design, I saw the benefit in hiring a professional to help establish something memorable and edgy to represent my style."

As photographers we bring value to our clients through our experience and expertise in our medium. Unless you're also a graphic designer, why wouldn't you want to hire a professional to bring that value to your identity? The investment is absolutely worth it, and it doesn't have to be a big cash outlay. Make contact with students in the graphic design program and trade work with them - designers frequently need good photography for their projects and many will be more than happy to work on an identity design for you in exchange.

Welcome to Pictory!

I love photography. Few things make me happier than a beautiful image—online or in print. That said, I’ve become a little complacent about some photos. The Internet is brimming with eye candy, but the vast majority of these images have lost their original context. Photo credits are rare and captions usually garbled, so I find myself often wondering: Who made this? What does it mean? The forces of the Internet can sometimes turn good work into confusing shrapnel.

I hope to do the opposite with Pictory. I want to collect images and stories directly from their sources: the people who create them. And then I want to make the best work that much better by editing, proofing, and compiling submissions into glossy online showcases. Big images. Careful details. Practical design. Credit and context.

Maybe it’s a new model for online magazines. Or, maybe it’s just the best I can do from my living room.

In any case, it’s a humble start, and it needs you. Enjoy the features, share Pictory with your friends, submit to the themes, and don’t be afraid to tell me what you think the site needs.
